Campion triumphs in rugby tournament
Campion hosted ISA and St Lawrence in a rugby tournament on Thursday 19 January. It was a lovely day for rugby with sunny, light winds and moderate temperature. The first match saw the two visiting teams ISA and St Lawrence lock horns. After a tight first half, St Lawrence asserted their dominance in the second half running away with a 31-0 win.
The second match saw Campion take on St Lawrence. The Campion boys came out playing a structured team game controlling ruck ball and tackling very well. Even though we were down 7-0 at half time we knew that we could upset St Lawrence and take the game. The second half continued in the same vein as the first, but this time Campion capitalised on their ball possession. Two successive penalties near the St Lawrence line saw the strong man of the team, Alex Michelakakis crash over for our first try. Loic Gailhouste converted to make it 7-7. The winning try came from an intercept try to big forward Khalid Mahmoud which Loic converted giving us a hard fought, impressive and first- ever win over St Lawrence with a 14-7 score line.
The third match saw us take on ISA. It was closer than we expected but we were good enough to come away with a 17-10 win. Our points came from two tries to Alex Michelakakis and one to our captain Dimitri Lorentzos. Loic kicked one conversion.
Campion was the winner of the tournament thanks to their good teamwork, rucking and tackling. Outstanding players were Dimitri Lorentzos with some strong running and tackling, Khalid Mahmoud with a gutsy display and technically sound game, Alex Michelakakis with dangerous running and solid tackling, Petro Petrides with some good runs, Nikolaos Yannakakis always reliable with good running and tackling and both Alex Rocanas and Victor Mantikas with some amazing, hard-hitting tackles which punished opposing players more than once. Loic Gailhouste with a very mature and solid all-round performance was awarded player of the tournament.
A big thank you to Mr Pasios, Ms Kefalas and Mr Politsopoulos for their support and services and to all those that came to watch the team in action. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon. We certainly did!
