Nursery (3 to 4 years old)

Children are accepted into Nursery when they have turned three years of age.
Once the pupils are happy with the transition from home to school, the class teacher, often supported by an experienced assistant, will begin developing their skills. Priority is given to language development, encouraged through stories, drama and songs. Daily art and craft activities, as well as imaginative play situations, present these children with many opportunities for self-expression. Specialist teachers provide lessons in Physical Education and Music. Later in the school year, pre-reading, writing and number exercises are introduced in preparation for moving onto Reception class.
Reception (4 to 5 years old)
The Reception class serves as an introductory year to the Junior School.
Again, language is of prime importance with books and stories playing an invaluable role alongside the more formal teaching of reading and writing. Number concepts are introduced gradually and practically, before moving on to the Mathematics scheme which continues in the Junior School. Other subjects including Science, History and Social Studies are covered through a lively topic-based approach. As in all areas at this stage, art and craft activities are an integral part of the daily programme. Reception children attend Music and Physical Education lessons with specialist teachers. Confidence in using a computer is developed in both pre-school classes.
