Annual Staff Concert

On Friday 25th January, parents, teachers, students and friends of Campion gathered to attend the annual Staff Concert. Campion’s Music Department never ceases to impress on these occasions with the talent of its musicians who performed again this year in a wide variety of genres, ranging from Baroque to traditional Russian pieces and excerpts from musicals. The evening’s programme was tied together in a distinguished manner by the concert’s coordinator and Head of Music, Rebecca Helsby, and proved to be highly entertaining. This year, the concert’s proceeds will be donated to the victims of the devastating fires in Mati from summer 2018.

The concert began with an organ performance by Roger Tilley and continued with a wide variety of performances on different instruments. In my opinion one of the highlights of the first half was the first movement from the Clarinet Quartet II in E minor, K374, by WA Mozart, performed by Grammenos Chalkias, Irina Shalenkova, Patrick Evans and Susan Norton.

The second part of the programme opened with a piece by Antonio Vivaldi, Largo from Cello Sonata in E minor, No 5, performed by Konstantinos Sfetsas on cello and Katerina Venetsanou on piano. This was followed by a number of pieces, mainly from the Romantic period, including Tchaikovsky, Chopin and many more. These displayed a pleasurable contrast to the first half which featured music from more Classical composers like Mozart and Boccherini. Close to the end of the programme, Marianna Katerelou managed to enchant the audience with her performance of Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy. This was later followed by a contrasting yet dynamic piece Blues from an American in Paris performed by Rebecca Helsby and Grammenos Chalkias, who accurately captured the piece’s vivacity with their spectacular talent. The programme closed with Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer performed by the ensemble of musicians; a wonderful way to end the night.

A warm thank you to the musicians for their performances, to Ms Rogakou for presenting the concert and to the staff who were involved in its organisation. Until next year!
