Xara Games 2017!

Campion School was delighted to host the Xara Games once again this year and it was yet another successful Special Olympics for both competitors and students! A humbling opportunity for Campion’s pupils, the Xara Games consist of many fun athletic activities in which both Campion volunteers and guests can participate. Students worked with the disabled participants, encouraging them, connecting to each of them in turn, and learning more about their daily lives.

The fun-filled schedule commenced with traditional Greek dances from Year 10 students that lifted the mood. The students showcased their hidden talents and were followed by a moving parade of all the institutions involved. The visiting athletes, accompanied by Campion volunteers, paraded along the field in a celebratory atmosphere where the event’s motto “we are all winners!” prevailed. The activities had to be put on hold when a surprise guest, singer Sakis Rouvas, came to join the festivities. Pictures were taken and smiles were shared as Mr Rouvas took photos with nearly every school participating. Once the excitement died down, the athletic activities began with the  guest participants walking, running and working in groups with the student volunteers in relay races. Some volunteers organised the long jump and shot putt for the athletes, who were encouraged to join in the activities and compete.

We ended the day on a high note with dancing and music with everyone involved. Both students and athletes left the sports field exhaustd but happy having shared a wonderful day together.
