On Wednesday 13th September a group of 15 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 visited the Callas exhibition at the Theocharakis Foundation which is located in the centre of Athens.

Mr Fahy and Mrs Helsby had organised a bus from school and when we arrived a very kind lady was there to guide as around the three floors that the exhibition covered. All three floors had different things to view. We looked at many of the magnificent dresses Callas wore during a number of her performances. Besides being the world’s greatest soprano, Callas was also a fashion icon. Most of the attire on view were dresses that she wore in her everyday life. They were all very impressive and elegant! We then looked at certain letters that Callas had written which were very interesting to read. Students who did not have prior knowledge of Maria Callas’s life were much more familiar with it when finished with the exhibition. Impressive photos were on display all around the exhibition, whilst some of her riveting arias were heard as background music, creating an imposing atmosphere. It was very exciting for the students to obtain the extra information on Callas’s life, since in three days’ time they would perform at the Megaro Musikis in her honour.

When all students and teachers were finished viewing the exhibition and all their questions had been answered Mr Aki, who accompanied us, took a memorable photo and we all went straight to the bus, as a long and tiring rehearsal for the concert was next!
