Tsiknopempti

Dear Parents,

In keeping with the Greek tradition of “Τσικνοπέμπτη” (Smoky Thursday) the Greek Department is planning to order souvlaki on Thursday 7th March in the Junior School. Tsiknopempti is part of the traditional celebrations of apókries, the Greek carnival season. While it is associated with the consumption of grilled and roasted meat, it is important to note that Tsiknopempti is more than that and it is about embracing the rich carnival traditions deeply rooted in Greek culture.

During Tsiknopempti the children will be offered the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities such as playing games, flying kites (weather permitting), listening to Greek traditional music, watching Greek dancers perform, and even joining in the Greek dancing if they desire.

Children should still have their own lunch from home or the canteen. If they wish to order souvlaki (chicken or pork), they should bring €3 (per piece) in a sealed, clearly labelled envelope and give it to the class teacher by Tuesday 5th March at the latest. Please send in the exact amount as change cannot be given. I am attaching a form, where you should place your order.

Please remember to order the souvlaki in advance, as children really enjoy the celebration and we won’t be able to make an extra order on the day. The extra cost of the souvlaki will be donated to a charity organisation.

Καλή Διασκέδαση!
